Personalised Wooden Lanterns
Wooden lanterns instead of glass — engraved with a name, a date, or a short line. Which editions exist, which occasions a lantern suits, and what’s actually safe to burn inside.
Why wood and not glass
Most personalised lanterns on the market are glass — engraved or printed, but ultimately an industrial product in countless variants. A wooden lantern is rare by comparison: the material brings its own grain, glows warmer in the light, and feels hand-made rather than another off-the-shelf gift. Precisely because wood is under-represented in this category, a lantern made from it automatically reads as more personal than yet another glass version — not because it costs more, but because you see it less often.
Motifs and editions
The lanterns come in several recurring editions, depending on motif and occasion:
- “Summer Breeze” and “Autumn Fern” — calm, floral nature motifs for everyday use
- “Autumn Shade” — the Halloween edition, for the darker season
- Maritime motifs — lighthouse and anchor, for anyone with a connection to the sea or the coast
- Tropical motifs — for a warmer, more summery look
All editions are available from around €21.95; exact finish and availability are on the relevant Etsy listing.
Prices come from the current Etsy listing and can change depending on edition and finish — the listing itself is always what counts.
Personalising: name, date, short line
On top of the motif, every lantern can be engraved with a name, a date, or a short line. That works much like the other personalised pieces from the workshop: you enter the wording during checkout on Etsy, and the engraving itself is done by laser, since that renders smaller lettering cleanly even on a lantern’s curved or limited surface. Short text works noticeably better than long — a name with a date, or a short line, is usually enough for the effect.
Which occasions a lantern suits
A lantern is one of the few gifts that suits almost any personal occasion without feeling pushy:
- For couples — a romantic, everyday-usable gift that doesn’t need a big occasion
- For an anniversary — as a smaller present alongside a bigger main gift; more on the wooden anniversary page
- For a wedding — as a personal guest gift, or an addition to a larger wooden wedding gift
- For a house-warming — as a warm welcome gift for a new home
The lower price compared with the bigger pieces makes a lantern practical exactly where a gift should feel personal without outshining the main present.
Candle, tealight, LED — what actually goes inside
What belongs inside a wooden lantern isn’t just a matter of taste, but a safety question too. A tealight in a matching glass insert is the most common and safest solution — the flame stays contained in glass, not in direct contact with the wood. An LED candle is the lowest-risk option, especially if the lantern is left burning unattended or stands outside. An open flame with no glass insert, directly in the wooden housing, is not advisable — regardless of manufacturer, that’s not a safe combination. Whether a glass insert is included, and which one, is on the relevant Etsy listing.
Using it outdoors: what wood can take
Solid wood generally copes well with short spells outdoors — an evening on the terrace, an event in the garden. For permanent outdoor use over weeks, in all weather, untreated or lightly oiled wood isn’t built for that: damp, direct sun and temperature swings wear the material down over time, regardless of the type of wood. Honestly: if you plan to leave the lantern outside regularly, bring it in to dry after use, or at least shelter it from prolonged rain — a blanket promise of season-long weather resistance isn’t something we can honestly make without our own long-term testing.
Frequently asked questions
Which candle fits a wooden lantern?
The safest option is a tealight in a matching glass insert, or an LED candle. An open flame with no glass insert, directly in the wood, isn’t advisable.
Can a wooden lantern stand outside?
Briefly, yes — for an evening on the terrace, for example. It isn’t built for permanent use in all weather, though; a dry, sheltered spot after use is the safer choice for its lifespan.
What do you give a couple for an anniversary?
A lantern with a name or date is a good, personal present for a smaller anniversary. For the 5th wedding anniversary — the wooden one — the material fits especially well; more on the relevant page.
How is wood engraved?
Mainly by laser engraving, which renders fine text and motifs cleanly even on smaller or curved surfaces. For larger, clear shapes, the CNC router is sometimes used instead — which method is used depends on the piece.
Can you get a lantern with your own wording?
Yes — name, date or a short line can be entered during checkout. For longer or more unusual wording, it’s worth a quick message first to check whether it’ll sit well on the surface.
