An LED candle is the lowest-risk option, especially if the lantern is left burning unattended or stands outside. An open flame with no glass insert, directly in the wooden housing, is not advisable — regardless of manufacturer, that’s not a safe combination. Using it outdoors: what wood can take

Solid wood generally copes well with short spells outdoors — an evening on the terrace, an event in the garden. For permanent outdoor use over weeks, in all weather, untreated or lightly oiled wood isn’t built for that: damp, direct sun and temperature swings wear the material down over time, regardless of the type of wood. Honestly: if you plan to leave the lantern outside regularly, bring it in to dry after use, or at least shelter it from prolonged rain — a blanket promise of season-long weather resistance isn’t something we can honestly make without our own long-term testing.
